The key to the room temperature superconductor, long thought to be a virtually unobtainable holy grail of electronics, was pressure. The new material substitutes super cooling for super pressure, which in some materials, can have equally powerful effects inducing superconductivity. Researchers claim that the new material needs no cooling and could be used to create room temperature superconducting wires. Professor John Tse of the University of Saskatchewan remarked, “If you put hydrogen compounds under enough pressure, you can get superconductivity. These new superconductors can be operated at higher temperatures, perhaps without a refrigerant.”

The device operates thanks to a phenomenon called corona wind. This corona wind is created by placing a series of live wires within uncharged conducting plates contoured into half cylinders, partially enveloping the wires. The live wires generate micro-scale plasma that conducts electricity.
The corona wind is created within the intense electrical field that results from the configuration of the wires and the conducting plates. The researchers say they were able to control the micro-scale discharge to produce maximum airflow without risk of arcing or sparks which could prove catastrophic to electronic devices

Using electrical signals emitted by the brain and picked up by electrodes attached to the user’s scalp, the system allows people to operate devices and perform tasks that previously they could only dream of. So far, the team, led by the IDIAP Research Institute in Switzerland, has carried out a series of successful trials in which users have been able to manoeuvre a wheelchair around obstacles and people using brainpower alone.
