Japanese temple resorts to manga to woo visitors

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

HACHIOJI, Japan — Girls clad in maids’ outfits are not traditionally associated with Buddhism, but that has not stopped monks at a centuries-old temple using Japanese pop culture to woo visitors.

The Ryohoji temple, built in the late 16th century in a Tokyo suburb, erected a colourful manga-inspired sign at its entrance in June and has since seen visitor numbers perk up — especially young men.

But it went a step further at the weekend, setting up tents and opening up a temporary cafe staffed by bonnet-wearing girls sporting classic frills, one of the recent popular themes among fans of anime and costume role-playing.

The “maids” look authentic and old-fashioned in every way — save for the short length of the skirts and the fake cats’ ears on their heads.

Honda Reveals ‘Personal Mobility’ Device

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

DailyTech – Honda Reveals ‘Personal Mobility’ Device.

Honda recently showed off a new personal mobility technology that closely mimics a robotic unicycle designed to help disabled people move around.

The new device, the U3-X, has a seat height a bit higher than an average person’s waistline, and riders must jump up a bit before they can put their feet on a foot rest.  Honda designed the U3-X so it can move forward and backwards, sideways and diagonally.

Riders simply need to lean the direction they wish to go in, and it has a top speed of 3.7 MPH.

Ai Sp@ce is a Japanese virtual 3D massively multiplayer online social game (MMOSG) developed by several companies that form the Ai Sp@ce Production Committee which was launched on October 15, 2008, despite an earlier announcement of a summer 2008 release.[1][2] Beta testing commenced between mid-September and mid-October 2008.[3] Primary development was handled by Headlock, with Dwango providing the world’s infrastructure and Internet service. Dwango’s subsidiary Niwango ties in the Nico Nico Anime Channel from the Nico Nico Douga video sharing website by providing users the opportunity to upload gameplaysequences online.[4]

A downloadable client program enables its users to interact through motional avatars with each other and primarily with bish?jo game heroines from three visual novels:Clannad by Key under Visual Art’sShuffle! by Navel under Omegavision, and Da Capo II by Circus.[5] After a player creates an avatar, one of the bish?jo game heroines is selected as a personal character doll, or “chara-doll”, to live with on one of the game’s three virtual “islands” which are patterned on the worlds featured in the three visual novels. The islands are connected by a central Akihabara Island where players with their chara-dolls can gather for chatting and events.[1] The first theme song for Ai Sp@ce is sung by Kotoko.[1]
